Ana Mercedes HOYOS

Geometrías Figurativas

Gallery

March 15 to April 28, 2017

There are many components present in the work of Ana Mercedes Hoyos representing the ways in which she addressed her plastic concerns throughout her artistic career. Although it is possible to think that her work is divided into periods, witnessing it together as a whole makes it possible to understand that the artist’s interest was always aimed at the exploration of three elements: geometry, light and color.

Some Economies

Space Project

March 15 to April 28, 2017

There are many well-known stories of ships that crossed the ocean in ancient times without using sophisticated technologies to guide them. Then it seemed that the sky and rudimentary compasses were the only instruments available for leading exploratory journeys or economic exchanges. Navigators like Marco Polo ventured in search of the wonders of the world in perilous voyages that uncovered new commercial and cultural routes. Nowadays, with GPS technologies or satellite location devices, it seems that defining the paths through which we travel is too simple. However, this guarantee of location and constant communication is ineffective against the adversities of nature.

Nadín OSPINA

"Del otro mundo" / (Otherworldly)

1st Floor Gallery

October 20 - November 18, 2016

Nadín Ospina (Bogotá, 1960) presents his latest project, titled Del otro mundo, which focuses on the fantastic and fictional production of the entertainment world: film, television, comics and the inexhaustible universe of pop collectibles. This series brings together many concerns that have been constant in the artist’s previous works: the detection and reaffirmation of cultural mergers and interactions, the allegorical representation of symbolic meetings as a metaphor of contemporary historical events, humor as a tool for reflection and the use of pop culture imagery with the consequent reappearance of fantastic creatures and Pre-Columbian references.

"Prohibidas las metáforas"

2nd Floor Gallery

October 20 - November 18, 2016

Prohibidas las metáforas brings together a series of large and medium drawings in charcoal on paper. In this exhibition, dislocation, exoticism and intercultural and hybrid identities are explored through the "clichés" of popular and tropical culture. This particular series arises from the inherent tensions in the constant negotiation required to build an identity outside of Colombia. The staging of a forced or voluntary identity is explored through absurd and fantastic compositions and questions about the concept of "Magical Realism" as a cultural and national reference. Different strategies are used in order to subordinate the contradictory in a delicate and imaginative order and question the notions of place and belonging.

"Wüin"

2nd Floor Gallery

"Arijuna, why are you taking pictures of these bones?” asked Antonio, my Wayuu guide, who spoke little Spanish and who I’d been traveling with for more than five hours by motorcycle in the deserts of Guajira from Punta Gallinas to Nazareth. “I'm not entirely sure, Antonio,” I replied, "...I guess because if we keep wasting water, we’ll be next after the animals”. The decision to build each of the photographs that make up this report from water was born from the need to educate the audience about the importance of preserving this vital resource, on which we depend directly to exist.
