Galería El Museo will be opening three exhibitions from three young Colombian artists on July 9. Ciudad Escenario (Scenario City) by Juanita Carrasco (Bogotá, 1977), will be shown in the First Floor Gallery; in the Second Floor Gallery, we will be exhibiting two series, AMPO and VIP, by young artist Javier Vanegas (Bogotá, 1984); and Prototipos para una Naturaleza Rehabilitada (Prototypes for a Rehabilitated Nature), Edwin Monsalve’s most recent work (Medellín, 1984), will be shown in the Space Project Room.

In this series, Juanita Carrasco portrays the post-industrial landscape based on what has been the core of her work, The city and the territory. In order to document and connect the world around us, the artist uses the walk as a medium to witness the transformation of urban life, revealing unconscious geographical zones. Her constant reflection on time and space is visible through her photography, which builds a structured narrative that leads to the capture of infinite details, from which the artist shapes her own vision of life in contemporary cities. Carrasco’s work is not only focused on topographic photography; she has produced diverse series such as “El típico corrientazo”, “Darse cuenta” or “Chapeta” in which she looks for fragments of city streets, cultural practices, traditional food, waste and workers, and then reuses them in the complex labyrinths she recreates.

In 2010, she completed her Master’s Degree in Photography, Art and Technique from Universidad Politécnica in Valencia (Spain), with which she delved into theoretical concepts and techniques based on the last trends in contemporary photography and acquired the necessary resources to theorize, analyze and criticize the same. She is currently directing a fine art digital lab called Fan Lab, created in 2009, that promotes the production of artistic photography through collaboration in the process of production and post-production of projects.

The exhibitions will be open to public until August 30 at the new Galería El Museo, located at Calle 81 No. 11 – 41. Open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Free admission.


 

The core of her work has focused on the city and the territory within an ongoing process that started with painting and led her to experiment with different media, finding in photography the right tool of representation that allows the repetitive capture of thousands of details collected by the artist to form her own vision of life in contemporary cities.
 
In a constant reflection on time and space, Juanita Carrasco uses walking as a kind of automatic writing capable of revealing unconscious areas of the geography that she subsequently builds and articulates, thereby generating narrative structures by means of recreational and creative experimentation with the medium. The ability to combine a macro and micro perspective to document the transformation of human life is what can best define her work, in which the presence of the photographer behind the camera is hardly noticeable.
 
Her Master in Visual Arts from Universidad Javeriana, with an emphasis in Fine Arts, provided her with training in different fields of visual expression, supported by drawing as the main tool in the use of new technologies and in the study of art history and philosophy. With her subsequent specialization in Multimedia Creation from Universidad de los Andes, she was able to explore reflections about the design, production, use, application and the impact of interactive projects online and other broadcast media in depth. She completed the Master’s Degree in Photography, Art and Technique from Universidad Politécnica de Valencia in 2010, with which she delved into the theoretical and technical concepts based on the latest trends of contemporary photography, and acquires the necessary tools to theorize, analyze and criticize the same.
 
Her work was strongly influenced by the movement emerging from the Düsseldorf School and is related to Andreas Gursky, and Thomas Struth, or to American artists such as Edward Burtynsky o Michael Wolf, which is reflected in her purpose of representing the post-industrial landscape with the desire to document and connect our surroundings.

Works
